Stay Safe: RNLI Wisdom for Summer Riders

At Powersport Marine, we’re proud to be an official RNLI Water Safety Ambassador. With over 25 years in the world of Sea‑Doo and personal watercraft, we know that enjoyment on the water starts with understanding how to stay safe. As summer heats up and more riders head for the coast, now is the perfect time to refresh your safety knowledge and ride with confidence.

Float to Live – A Lifesaving Technique Every Rider Should Know

If you ever fall into the water unexpectedly, the most important thing to do is stop and float. The RNLI’s “Float to Live” advice is simple and effective: lie on your back, tilt your head so your ears are submerged, and relax. Focus on keeping calm and breathing steadily. You may need to gently move your arms and legs to stay afloat, and don’t worry if your legs sink—everyone floats differently. This technique gives you vital time to regain control and increases your chances of rescue.

Wear a Buoyancy Aid and Attach Your Kill Cord

Wearing the correct safety gear isn’t just good practice—it’s essential. Every rider should wear a properly fitted personal flotation device (PFD) every time they get on a Sea‑Doo. It helps keep you safe if you end up in the water, especially in unexpected situations. Just as important is attaching your kill cord. This simple safety tether is connected to the ignition and will stop the engine if you fall off. It prevents your craft from continuing without you and reduces the risk of injury or damage.

Be Ready to Call for Help

Before heading out, make sure you have a way to call for help. A mobile phone stored in a waterproof pouch is a practical option for most riders. Alternatively, some prefer a personal locator beacon (PLB), especially when exploring more remote areas. In a coastal emergency, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard. Having quick access to communication can make a crucial difference in urgent situations, so always keep it within easy reach.

Know Where to Ride and Respect Local Rules

When riding near lifeguarded beaches, it’s important to launch and operate your craft in the right zones. Look for the black-and-white chequered flags—these mark the area for personal watercraft. Always avoid the red and yellow flagged zones, which are reserved for swimmers. Keeping a respectful distance from other water users is part of being a responsible rider and helps create a safer environment for everyone. If you're riding in unfamiliar waters, take a moment to check local tide times and conditions before launching.
